BASIC PENSION POVERTY
IN
EU
At this summit a political consensus was achieved by all Member States on
a set of objectives pertaining to the
adequacy and sustainabity of pension systems i.e the Members should endeavour
to attain a level of 40% of their median wages as their basic state pension by
2007 and thereafter work towards 60%.There was an endorsement for an initial
set of common statistical indicators with which to consistently monitor
progress towards the objectives across Member States.
An income of 60% of the national average wage is the baseline measure of poverty by the E.U. and the UK Government.
The British Basic Pension is £87.30pw which is 19% of the National average net wage
The British Basic Pension with Pension Credit is £119.05pw which is 26% of the National average net wage.(£458pw)
Only 2.7million of the 11.8million pensioners claimed Pension Credit in 2005
41% of Pensioners have NO occupational pension to supplement the State Pension
AN UNACCEPTABLE PROPORTION OF PENSIONERS ARE IMPOVERISHED..... WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THIS?
Remember pensioners are almost 40% of the electorate (by the year 2030 we will
be over 50%) therefore are extremely powerful.
We can make or break any government at election time.
